Is There Life on Exoplanets?

We have currently not found evidence of life on any planet besides Earth, including exoplanets.

Exoplanets yield great potential for harboring life, but we have not found any evidence of life on planets beyond Earth. The following article describes some of the reasons why we have not found life and the techniques and methods used to do so.

Do Exoplanets Contain Alien Life?
Astronomers will continue their hunt for more exoplanets, driven by a conviction that, in a galaxy so large, filled with so many stars, and still more planets, life is far more abundant than the present statistics indicate.

Is There Life on WASP-39b?
While we have not found life on WASP-39b, WASP-39b is a candidate for alien life because of its complex atmospheric chemistry.
Is There Life On Kepler-186f?
While we have not found life on Kepler-186f, Kepler-186f is a candidate for alien life due to many terrestrial planet similarities to Earth and possible surface liquid water.
Is There Life On TOI-1452b?
While we have not found life on TOI-1452b, TOI-1452b is a great candidate for alien life due to the possibility of the planet being covered in an ocean of liquid water.
Is There Life On Proxima B?
Proxima B is a great candidate for containing life due to its similar mass to the Earth, the possibility of liquid water, and its proximity to its host star, Proxima Centauri.
Is There Life on Kepler 452b?
While we have not found life on Kepler 452b, Kepler 452b is a great candidate for alien life because it shares many similarities with Earth.

How Are Exoplanets Detected?

Exoplanets are detected using a variety of methods. The transit, radial velocity, direct imaging, and indirect observation methods. These methods allow us to detect and observe exoplanets based on their position and other properties.

The following article describes these methods more in-depth and some of the drawbacks and benefits for each respective method and why some exoplanets remain undiscovered.

Why is detecting exoplanets so difficult?
Exoplanets are very hard to directly see with telescopes. This is because they are hidden by the bright glare of the stars they orbit.

Transit Method

The transit method works by observing a preselected study of stars for any periodical reduction in observed brightness. If this reduction is observed in any of the selected stars, it is possible that the star's observable brightness is being reduced by a planet passing in front of it.

Doppler Spectroscopy(Radial Velocity Method)

The transit method is an indirect method for finding exoplanets and brown dwarfs from radial-velocity measurements of Doppler shifts in the spectrum of the planet's parent star.

Illustration of the precision radial velocity method for exoplanet searches. The presence of an exoplanet can be inferred from the periodic Doppler shifts of the stellar spectrum as the star’s motion wobbles due to the gravitational pull of the unseen exoplanets.
